Wow, I think I’m going to enjoy reading Field Yates during training camp. Great stuff…

“Didn’t get to lock in too much on the young running backs — Shane Vereen and Stevan Ridley — but from an eye-test perspective it looked like Vereen was in good condition and perhaps a bit bigger than he was in 2011.” —

Jeff Howe also mentioned that Vereen was getting reps with the fist team.

OTA #1 observations - Extra Points - Boston.com → boston.com

Great recap of today from Greg Bedard, including a contrary opinion to what we posted earlier with Mike Reiss saying he thought Ras-I looked good.

None of the rookies just assumed a starting role. That’s no surprise at all. But Chandler Jones, Dont’a Hightower and Tavon Wilson appeared to not be far off from being in the mix. Not much jumped out about Jones that we didn’t already know. He’s learning his way around this defense. Same with Jake Bequette.

“Nate Solder, predictably, looks like the starting left tackle, while Dan Connolly appears to have the edge over Dan Koppen at center. Robert Gallery was filling in for Mankins, and Ryan Wendell was in for Waters. Marcus Cannon was in for Vollmer. Now, maybe this doesn’t mean a whole lot because there were three key absences on the line, but it’s worth pointing out.” —BostonHerald.com - Blogs: The Blitz» Blog Archive » Observations from Patriots’ first open OTA

“Second-year CB Ras-I Dowling, who limited to two games in 2011, was a full participant after undergoing hip surgery. I watched him closely as he lined up across from WR Brandon Lloyd, and one thing you immediately notice is his size. This amateur scout also felt he was moving well.” —

Well he made it through one practice without getting hurt!

“At Syracuse, defensive end Chandler Jones wore No. 99, but barring a change in the coming months, he’ll have 95 here in New England. His thoughts? “It really doesn’t matter at all,” he said. “I try not to get into what number I want to get. You know what? Whatever number they give me, I’m happy with. I’m happy to be a Patriot.” —

Admirable attitude, still not loving him in 95 though.

“I just know there’s a focus about us where we’re communicating a lot. It’s huge in having that in developing that team chemistry. I’m really excited about this year. I think we all have raised our level of focus.” —New England Patriots Blog - ESPN Boston

Latest 53-man Patriots roster projection

This is starting to get a little easier the more I look at it. No need to waste a spot on Gerard Warren, he’s not going anywhere else.

This time around the tough cut was Dane Fletcher. The combination of Hightower, Cunningham and Tracy White left me without a spot for him. He’s no better than third at either inside linebacker spot. Cunningham has more versatility when comparing him to Fletcher in pass rush. So I like him, but basically Hightower is going to push him down the depth chart in multiple areas.

Defensively you have a number of guys who can do multiple things, especially in the secondary. Markell Carter was my surprise to make the team.

As for Andre Carter if he wants to come back to the Pats he probably can. It would be easy to PUP him and get him ready for the stretch run. But the Pats have protected themselves sufficiently should another team make an amazing offer.

Updated look at jersey numbers - New England Patriots Blog - ESPN Boston → espn.go.com

Safe to say a lot of these are temporary, but one I’d love to see stay the same is Lloyd’s 88. Dont’a Hightower’s 45 is sure to change.

Patriots will struggle in post-Tom Brady era - AFC East Blog - ESPN → espn.go.com

Not even a Hoodie Head like myself is going to argue that the Pats will simply keep on chugging once Brady and Belichick leave, but I would argue that Belichick is the more important piece of the puzzle, by a nose.

Look, Brady’s probably going to be the greatest QB of all time by the time he hangs them up. You can’t minimize the player he is, but the precedent is there with the 49ers for a team to maintain a level of dominance through a quarterback transition. Belichick has spoken admirably of what San Francisco did going from Montana to Young, and with his sense of history it wouldn’t surprise me to see him try to do the same thing in New England.

There’s also the matter of the currently much-maligned Patriots defense. In a few years they will start to hit their peak, and with the talent that has been added over the last few seasons there’s no telling what their ceiling is. So that should also help. Just look at how long Baltimore has gotten by with a great defense and just average quarterback play.

Finally there’s Belichick. In football the coach is king and BB affects every facet of the Patriots football organization. Some will point to the Matt Cassel year as an example of how the Pats can survive without Brady, but that was a team that simply won the games the should’ve and lost to the every good team they played. That makes 2008 a little deceiving. Still, there’s no arguing that the Pats were prepared when Brady went down, and there’s plenty of reasons to believe that Brian Hoyer and Ryan Mallett would be capable if put in the same situation. Last year’s Colts team shows just how badly things can go if you don’t have a viable back up quarterback plan.

Ultimately Belichick and Brady are so intertwined it’s hard to make definitive statements about what one would do without the other. But as long as the Belichick system is in place the odds seem decent that the Patriots will remain competitive after Brady retires.
