2012 Award Recipients: Matt Light (by PopWarnerVideos)

Longest-tenured Patriots (Brady, Faulk, and Light) pt 1 (by dodie2g)

Thanks for the memories Matt Light, as he officially announces his retirement this morning. The bearded brotherhood will never be the same without their leader.

When a team drafts a left tackle it’s easy to speculate that they won’t have to worry about the position for another decade, but Matt Light is an instance where that is actually true.

He was the heart and soul of an offensive line that protected Tom Brady in six conference championships and five Super Bowls. It just doesn’t get any better than that.

When it’s official we’ll do a full Matt Light appreciation day, but for now here’s that time he smacked Channing Crowder.

Regarding the game Light played: Tom Brady went back to pass 43 times. Light gave up two pressures (actually, one hit on Brady and one pressure) and zero sacks. Thirty-four times, the man across from him was either Osi Umenyiora or Jason Pierre-Paul. And he never gave up a sack. That was a great game Light played.

Thanks to Jeff Howe for mentioning this, I didn’t catch Light’s injury while watching the game, but clearly he knew the situation and knew his options and how they would affect the team. Matt Light will never get the true love and respect he deserves for protecting Tom Brady’s blind side for the last decade, but this is just another example of what a warrior the guy is.

Matt Light returns to Patriots
It’s great to have Light back for at least one more season. He was the biggest question mark after the lockout ended, and it took a little time but with Nate Solder still unsigned and losing valuable practices it was a move the Patriots had to make.
Solder’s development will affect whether or not Light sticks around for 2012, but it’s good to know that Tom Brady’s blindside will be covered by a solid veteran even if Light does occasionally have a rough outing.
You also can’t put a price on the cohesion and personality of the offensive line. It’s pretty clear that he’s the leader of that group.
