Must Watch Belichick Football History Lesson Press Conference
BB was happy to talk to some x and o’s today. He touches on the advent of the nickel defense, why guys end up playing on the defensive side of the ball, and a whole host of other fun nuggets.
Leaves me wondering is it just special days that he gets into football history mode? Or is it only special days when reporters ask him football history questions?
One more throwback game this year? Dolphins or Bills?
Nice article by Frenz on Jabar Gaffney. Gaffney’s emergence in the 2006 AFCDG in San Diego was huge. It’s frustrating to imagine what a great 3rd WR he’d be in this offense for the Patriots now. Especially since McDaniels poached him and didn’t even last two seasons. Highly doubt there’s a Pats fan out there that wouldn’t flip Ochocinco for Jab in a second.
PATRIOTS DEFENSE: THE NEW NO-NAMES – BEN REITER
Bill Belichick has built a Patriots defense from spare parts, castoffs and converted receivers. It has bent—but not broken—as New England has run its record to 9–3. Will it be good enough against the league’s better offenses in the playoffs? Starting outside linebacker Rob Ninkovich makes no bones about what the defense tries to do (page 68): “We have to progress as a defense and get the offense the ball. That’s our job, to put the ball in their hands as many times as possible during the game, so they can do what they do best, and that’s score touchdowns.”

Yahoo: Mega Patrick Chung Article
Great stuff. Hope that Patchung! gets back out there this week. We need him for a lot of reasons.
This was a strange time for Oregon. The Ducks, who had been dominant for years, were stumbling. In 2006, they went 7-5 and found themselves in the unappealing Las Vegas Bowl. The coaches held a meeting that season and devised a new team philosophy they called “Win the Day,” during which players were encouraged to push as hard as they could whether it was a game, practice or weight lifting session.
Nobody seized this mentality quite like Patrick. Neal remembers him dropping to the ground and doing 20 pushups during quiet moments of practice. Soon other players were doing pushups, too. It became a tradition. And as Neal looks back, he says the foundation for the Ducks’ current run of conference titles and appearances in BCS bowls was laid the week Chung fell to the grass and began doing pushups.
“Nobody asked him to do it,” Neal said. “He did it on his own.”
There’s only a very few number of teams, maybe four or five, that were under 50 percent nickel. So, when you talk about what defensive system do you run – virtually every team in the league, the defense they play the most is nickel. But are the Pats a 4-3 or 3-4 team!?!?!?!? Bill Belichick […]
