Today on WEEI Ian Rapoport of the Boston Herald reported that in his conversations with NFL personnel people he learned that the Patriots only have about 12 players considered to be quality starters. He later tweeted that he was surprised by this number and later confirmed it with some others down at the Senior Bowl.
So who are the Pats 12 quality starters? Our best guess:
This of course doesn’t include players who are free agents this year (Mankins, Light) nor players who were injured last year (Bodden, Ty Warren). So assuming returns from injury/re-signings the number could be as high as 16 before looking outside the organization.
I also consider players like Brandon Spikes and Jermaine Cunningham as guys who could make the leap in their second year. Green-Ellis also has to be on the bubble after a 1000-yard season, he might even be in that top 12 at the expense of our two time pro bowler Brandon Meriweather. But for other guys like TBC, Ninkovich, and Sanders they’re probably never getting any better than they are right now, so they have to be looked at as replaceable.
It’s hard not to say that a big part of this is all the trading down the Patriots have done over the years, maximizing quantity but losing out on quality. This is why there are rumblings that the Pats will acquire a lot of talent this offseason, whether it’s by trading UP for once or signing/re-signing quality free agents.
Last time the Pats won a playoff game… sigh…

Stumbled upon this website today and they have some authentic jerseys for just $45.99 which is a steal. Could’ve put up a couple different options but I think there needs to be more Wilfork jerseys out there…

Onion Sportsdome: BB threw acid in Brady’s face
A couple chuckles in here for sure, but I think they’re downplaying BB’s attractiveness. Ladies love the mad geniuses.

With the second highest payroll in the league – a large chunk of that going to Tom Brady and Vince Wilfork – the Patriots spent a lot. Fortunately for their financial efficiency, they also won. A lot. A league-leading 14 victories vaulted New England into the top five, as did the club’s ongoing commitment to roster value. Under Bill Belichick, the Patriots have consistently: (A) pursued budget free agents; (B) traded players in their peak earning years; © gotten production out of young players such as rookie tight end Rob Gronkowski; (D) moved back in the draft to make said young players even more affordable. (Thirty-three players on New England’s roster have three seasons or fewer of NFL experience). Really, what else would you expect from a franchise that made the humble hoodie a fashion statement?
Penny-wise: Receiver Wes Welker ($1.9 million base salary) and jack-of-all-trades Danny Woodhead ($395,000 base salary) provide bang and scrappiness for the buck.

I know this might be a little hard to read but I’m posting it anyways. Say hello to a full season of snap percentages.
