The last time we saw a Bill Belichick hoodie, he was wearing the 2013 Blue Nike cut off to extreme proportions as the Patriots lost Super Bowl 52 to the Eagles. Belichick had won Super Bowl 49 wearing the 2013 Blue, but that was with sleeves intact.
Want a common thread for the Patriots’ Super Bowl losses? Belichick cut off the sleeves of his sweatshirts all three times.
So yeah, it took us 17 seasons but we can finally say we need Linda Holliday to keep the scissors from BB before the big ones.
What can we expect in Hoodie lore this season?
— Last year the 2013 Hot Jacket surpassed the iconic Gray Cut Reebok Hoodie, it also is now the winningest all-time wardrobe piece for Belichick.
— The No-Elvis from SB51 continues to show up in practices, while a new fully-Elvis’d Hot Jacket appeared in eight games in 2017, going 8-2 including the AFC Championship against the Jaguars.
— Last playoffs Belichick threw one significant curveball, breaking out a super old Blue Reebok Hoodie he hadn’t worn since 2011 against the Titans. He never took off the winter coat, illegally revealing the non-Nike sideline logo, but it was there. It’s moves like these that keep this Hoodie Databaser up at night.
— Upon offseason reflection, I wonder if it’s possible that the SB52 hoodie was just the cut-up SB49 hoodie. Maybe Belichick was really testing how much of the hoodie’s power resides in the sleeves. The answer appears to be the power to make the last play in a Super Bowl resides completely in the sleeves.
— Digging into the regular season cut/not cut vs. playoffs numbers might be a worthwhile endeavor this fall.
— The Hot Jacket should only continue to pad its lead this season, raising the question of whether Belichick’s bust in Canton should be in a hoodie or a hot jacket (how far down the neck do they go?). The real fun is as we await more from the greatest hits closet. Could the cutoff Grey, one recently brought back at the Pats Pro Shop, make an appearance?
Only Belichick knows for sure but at this point, I fully believe he’s doing it all just to mess with me.
