Sally Jenkins drops another bomb on the commish. Here’s the money paragraph:
The “why is he doing this?” question still lingers; Goodell’s motive in pursuing Brady so hard with such a weak case is the fascinating question. The answer seems to be based in personality, a vain self-conception and tone deafness that make him incapable of admitting mistakes or cutting his losses. He has staked his personal power and credibility on the legal argument that if he wants to suspend Brady for life and fine him a billion dollars, his authority still supersedes that of a federal judge, who has no right to interfere.

You know how Edelman has brill okay chemistry with Brady? Well I’ve been wondering having been out for a good while, when he comes back will it seem as if he was never out or will him and Brady have to work that chemistry back up? Wondering the same about Lafell?
Nah, not worried at all about Edelman. You can’t undo six seasons of chemistry in two weeks. The guy takes a beating, it’s smart to just keep him healthy as possible. We all know what he’s capable of.
As for LaFell I think they’re being cautious because he’s such a physical player, less so for the hits he’ll take, more so for the blocks he delivers. For LaFell I think there will be a little bit more of a “knock the rust off” period though as he was in a walking boot this offseason and that had to affect his preparation.
It would be great to get him back this week, get him some work in the third preseason game and then he should be good to go.
Do you think Brady has the grounds for a defamation lawsuit against the NFL or Wells. It seems to me that the damage to his “brand” is significant and, given the many well chronicled failings of the Well’s report, their is little real evidence of any wrong doing on Brady’s part. Your thoughts?
From my crash course in law over the past six months I’ve gathered that he would have to prove intent to do harm which can be difficult to do. Doesn’t mean it’s impossible, but what you’re looking at is showing Kensil (or whoever) at the NFL offices specifically planted some of the stories, like the Judy Batista NFL.com one, to make Brady look bad. I mean, there’s little doubt they did just that, but then you’re getting into reporters giving up their sources and that’s always a tough road to go.
I think ultimately Brady just needs to focus on the suspension at hand, because even if Judge Berman wipes it out the appeal will drag on into next year. Does Brady want to put another trial on top of that? I’d guess no.
And really, I think there’s been plenty of damage done right back on the NFL with the way they’ve handled it. We’re seeing it today with Mike Freeman’s article that even the owners aren’t too happy.
