According to ESPN Stats and Information, over Brady’s first 10 postseason appearances, New England’s defense allowed an average of 15.8 points per game and got a sack every 13.2 dropbacks. In his past 16 playoff games, the defense has allowed an average of 22.9 points per game and got a sack every 18.2 dropbacks.
During the 10-0 stretch, the Pats defense allowed 20 or more points only three times; to the Panthers and Eagles in the Super Bowl, and to the Pittsburgh Steelers in a 41-27 AFC Championship game blowout.
Dating back to the AFC title game win over the Ravens (23-20), the defense has allowed 20 or more points in six straight playoff games, culminating in a 26-16 loss in the Championship game in Denver last January, when New England gave up 507 yards to the Broncos, the most they’ve allowed in any game — regular season or postseason — under Belichick.
That hit a very familiar nerve with the New England coach.

There’s only a very few number of teams, maybe four or five, that were under 50 percent nickel. So, when you talk about what defensive system do you run – virtually every team in the league, the defense they play the most is nickel.
But are the Pats a 4-3 or 3-4 team!?!?!?!?

New England Patriots’ Super Bowl Hopes Rest on Darrelle Revis & Co. | The MMQB with Peter King
As much credit as Revis/Browner deserve, the emergence of Hightower/Collins/Chandler has been equally important. And we can’t forget about solid performances from Ninkovich, Wilfork, McCourty on the back end, and a defensive tackle rotation that has provided much-needed depth.
I think they’re a little vulnerable coverage-wise on some tight ends. You might be able to get something going there. And be patient with the running game. Make ‘em come down. There should be some vulnerability on the back end if that’s the case. If you can get them to play seven-man spacing, I’d run the ball until the cows come home on them. That’s the way to do it. That keeps Brady off the field and eventually, I think, they’ll wear down.

Seems like a pretty accurate assessment of how to attack the Pats D.

So the internets are all abuzz this afternoon with Wes Welker dropping an astonishing (not really) eleven foot or toe references in his nine minute press conference. You can see them all in one 20 second clip here at Deadspin if you don’t want to watch the whole thing below. It reminds me of the time […]
