I think Coach Belichick’s one of the best coaches I’ve ever been around and probably one of the best coaches the game’s ever seen. He’s extremely thorough. He’s extremely disciplined in his approach. He’s simplistic and complex at the same time. Some people take the simple and make it complex. Bill takes the complex and makes it simple and I think that when you’re able to do that and do that for your players, they can function better mentally and physically and that’s the goal. The goal is to reduce the amount of mental drag on your players so they can play the game fast. And finding players that can do that is an important quality that we all look for.

Dawn of the Planet of the 2014 New England Patriots ᴴᴰ » (Official Trailer) (by Y . K . I . H ♔ #NEMilitia)
Can we start an organized fan movement to get the Krafts to take down that ridiculous 16-0 banner and the even more ridiculous Kenny Chesney Pirate Nation banner from Gillette Stadium? We haven’t won a single Super Bowl since those went up. I am a firm believer that excellence should be rewarded and only Super Bowls should be celebrated with banners in the Stadium.
I know I’m probably in the minority, but the 16-0 banner doesn’t really bother me all that much. That season was insane and I think a team that was two minutes away from being the undisputed greatest of all time deserves some kind of acknowledgement even if they did fall short.
Let’s do a poll to see what you guys think…
Do you expect the offense to pick up the pace this year
I would hope so, but I think what we’ve learned is that it’s best to pick your spots with the no-huddle unless you’re down by a couple scores. The biggest thing is just getting everyone on the same page with the normal offense.
For all those piling on Brady because he had some stats that were down last year, the simplest truth is that the passing game was very much in transition last year and the offensive line didn’t do them any favors with a up-and-down year.
Add in the injuries to Amendola, Dobson, Thompkins and Gronk and it’s actually amazing they were as good as they were. I think 2013 is a feath in Brady’s cap, not a sign of deterioration.
So yes, with a full year in the system for guys like Dobson/Thompkins/Boyce (the latter two have stood out already in OTAs while Dobson is still rehabbing), things should only get better. If they can get Gronk healthy that’s a huge piece.
As always, the season is a process, so I’d expect the amount of no huddle to slowly escalate as we get into the late fall and winter. But it’s best utilized in short spurts to really turn the screws on a defense at specific points in the game.
Overuse it and the offense can lose it’s rhythm and get off track. I think we’ve seen quite a few instances of that in the last couple seasons. 2011 was a special collection of smart, experienced and versatile weapons that allowed them to do special things. I’m fine being a little more traditional now, they just need to stay healthy, but there are plenty of more potential weapons nows. Should be fun.

Good signs…
Bryan (Charlestown) What about Kenbrell Thompkins and Josh Boyce stood out to you today?
Mike (3:28 PM) Bryan, they caught everything thrown to them. And there were quite a few footballs thrown in their direction, by both Brady and Garoppolo. With Dobson and LaFell not practicing, Thompkins stepped in and ran quite a few routes alongside Julian Edelman and Danny Amendola as more of that outside presence. At one point, Tom Brady connected with him and was so fired after the play that he went up to him and butted his helmet with his own helmet. As for Boyce, I think I counted three touchdown catches for him. He looks to be playing faster, making good reads after the snap, and playing with more confidence. I would caution anyone from getting too excited about a June passing camp practice, but I will admit I had this thought afterwards, “Is this what it could look like when the light goes on in that first-to-second-year jump?”

Big year coming up for the Gronk, if he can just be healthy in January and February I think the Pats have a legit shot at winning the Super Bowl. Without him, they’d have to catch all the breaks, which isn’t out of the question, but it would obviously be a whole lot easier with #87 on the field.
