In some ways, Dowling could be considered an extra draft pick this year. He played in just two games as a rookie and is trying to work his way back into football shape. But Dowling still looks a step slow and had trouble covering quick receivers. He has to make a lot of progress between now and training camp in order to win a meaningful role in the secondary.

No player has been had a wider array of commentary this off-season. The Pats beat writers are up and down on him. One practice Reiss likes what he’s doing, Bedard doesn’t. The next Dowling is getting his reps taken by Sterling Moore. No player will get more scrutiny in camp. You just can’t be the first overall pick of day two of the draft and fly under the radar. Still, I think the Pats see something in him that we haven’t seen yet. First thing is just for him to stay healthy and the rest will come.
I’d also point out that it’s tough for a CB who’s biggest asset is his length and ability to jam to stand out in a no contact practice.
