Patriots 2013 Mock Draft Tracker
Updated!
If I was a betting blogger and had to bet on the first round pick being one of five players I’d go with:
I don’t think I agree that Spikes is that expendable. The Patriots run defense was the best it’s been in a decade last year, in large part because of Spikes. While I think adding another linebacker who excels in coverage, and can possibly take snaps away from Spikes, should be a priority, I still think he brings a lot of value to the table.
One interesting shift that could happen is sliding Hightower to middle linebacker, but I think Spikes stays this season. Whether or not he earns another contract from the Pats will depend in large part on how he does in coverage when he is on the field.
Second Round (38) – Keenan Allen, WR, California
After running a slower than ideal 40 time Keenan Allen slides into the second round and right into the Patriots lap. Allen is a trues “X” receiver that adds size and physicality to the perimeter of the Patriots offense. He won’t stretch the field with speed or explosion, but what he can do is catch the ball. Allen is one of the best route runners in the draft, has played in a pro style passing system and knows how to beat different coverages. His body positioning is very good as is the way he tempos his routes. Once thought of as the top receiver in the draft a PCL injury and the inability to workout at 100% pre-draft drop him to pick 38. The Patriots are likely to have a group of receivers graded closely together. If their top choice is off the board it makes sense for them to move down and pick up the extra selection.

Not surprisingly I’m totally on board with Loyko’s final mock draft. As Keenan Allen began to fall in the rankings I took a closer look at him and I really think he’s a good Patriots fit.
Other choices are all solid, and are very close positionally to my final mock that will drop tomorrow.

It will be interesting to see if there is a true competition between Ridley and Bolden for primary ball carrier. Before Bolden’s four-game suspension in 2012, he was challenging Ridley for touches, even as Ridley was on his way to the fourth-best rushing season in team history.

Tavon Wilson Patriots Highlights 2013 (by MorinIsland34) Thanks to @OliverBThomas for sending this video my way. Great flashback when even Mike Mayock was stumped by the Patriots’ selection of Tavon Wilson. I think a lot of people underestimate Wilson, but he should have every chance to start at safety this year. (Source: https://www.youtube.com/)
