Taking a temperature on the Patriots’ defense three days into training camp, there looks like legitimate hope and promise for a stronger front seven with multiple encouraging pass-rushing options. But the lingering question of whether enough reinforcements were added in the secondary remains.

Good stuff from Frenz who made it to practice this weekend…

Jermaine Cunningham enters the 2012 season under a watchful eye, but on Saturday, he was playing with a purpose. He consistently put pressure on the quarterback in 11-on-11 drills, displaying a good mix of speed and power in his pass rush. He did show some inconsistent effort against the run but seemed to flip a switch whenever the offense was in a passing formation.

Dont’a Hightower was pegged as a do-almost-anything linebacker when the Patriots drafted him in April, including performing as a blitzer and pass defender. He looked comfortable doing both, nearly de-cleating running back Brandon Bolden on a re-route, and timing up a blitz as if he knew the offense’s snap count.

Couple of my favorite nuggets:

While we’re a long way from having a definitive answer on how much first round-pick Chandler Jones will contribute as a rookie, he got off to a very good start in the first padded practice. Not only was he a perfect 3-0 in the one-on-one drill, Jones did a nice job being physical and active during 11-on-11s. It wasn’t perfect – Jones got turned around once and gave up leverage a few times – but an impressive day.

WLB Jerod Mayo has been the best defensive player through three days as he continues to grow into the playmaking role the Patriots have carved out for him.

Stevan Ridley was taking reps with the first-team offense on Saturday and looked good while running through contact during 11-on-11 drills. The second-year running back out of LSU made a couple of good runs during the non-contact drills, but found holes and absorbed contact well during the full-contact drills.
