Throwback Thursday: A Dark Horse (from April 25th, 2008)
Was looking through my original Patriots blog today that started in December of 2007 and some of the posts are pretty entertaining.
Some because of how wrong I was, others because I’m preaching the same stuff I preach now, but this one is just Don Banks nailing the Jerod Mayo pick.
Maybe I’ll make these throwbacks to the old blog a weekly thing in the offseason.
“When we’re preparing for games, he’s not only able to watch film and see things coming, but he’s able to go to the coaches and say, ‘Why don’t we tweak this defense this way, because it better fits what they do?’ ” said Devin McCourty, who started alongside Gregory at safety in nine of the Patriots’ 16 regular-season games this season. “When we’re in meetings we’ll have something in the defense and we’re watching [film] and Steve will say, ‘Why don’t we do this?’ We’ll all sit there and look at him and be like, ‘You’re right, that probably would be better.’ I think that’s what makes him so good. “Steve always has something each week we play that he sees and things we can do. That’s why we call him a future head coach.”
Steve Gregory of Patriots putting football smarts to good use – Sports – The Boston Globe
Funny how we never heard this stuff when everyone had Gregory getting cut last offseason. He’s really blossomed in his second year with the Pats. Has he been perfect? No. Has he missed some tackles? Yup. But overall, he’s been really solid playing primarily as a robber safety, similar to what Rodney Harrison did.

Bill Barnwell on the NFL playoffs – Grantland
Really good preview from Bill Barnwell. It’s rare that national guys know the Patriots as well as Barnwell clearly does (is he a Pats fan?). Below he hits on what I’ve been saying about this Patriots defense for two years now…
Belichick might be the greatest defensive mind of his generation, but even he needs a few players to piece together some sort of competent defense. New England’s defense has fallen apart as the season has gone along, and there’s little reason to think it will get better. The Patriots ranked 10th in defensive DVOA during the first half of the season, but after their Week 10 bye, they had the league’s fifth-worst defensive DVOA. Their run defense was already bad and stayed that way, but their pass defense really fell off, dropping from eighth in the first half to 24th in the second half. The reasons why are staring you in the face within that table above, but one of the manifestations of this subpar defense was a lack of turnovers. The Patriots forced a takeaway in each of their games before the bye, eventually accruing 19 in nine games, an average of 2.1 per contest. After the bye, they struggled to force turnovers at the same rate. Although they finished with 10 in seven contests, that included two games with four takeaways each against the Broncos and Ravens. They had three games without forcing a single turnover, games that resulted in a loss to Carolina, a miraculous comeback victory over Cleveland, and a Week 17 win over Buffalo. The Patriots finished 13th in takeaway rate after finishing in the top three each of the last three seasons. The Patriots were 24th in forcing three-and-outs and were a league-average defense in the red zone; if they don’t force takeaways, they struggle to get off the field.
Competition fuels Julian Edelman’s fire – ESPN Boston
MUST READ ALERT!!!!!!
Edelman is a marked man in these playoffs, and he knows it. Practice has been edgy this week in preparation for the Colts. There’s chance a punch or two has been thrown, though Arrington would only smile knowingly when asked for confirmation. “That’s Edelman,” Arrington said. “Man, I love that guy.”
The bye week was huge,” he said. “I’m sure everyone saw me hobbling around. It was nice to get that extra week of treatment in … It’s going [well], it’s improved every day.
Tough-minded Logan Mankins talks ankle injury – ESPN Boston
So good to see Mankins has practiced all week. Good sign and I’d bet if he played on a torn ACL he barely even needs an ankle at all to play this weekend and play well.

Good news the surgery is over. Dr Andrews said it went very well.

My first reaction is that it’s not an impossible schedule, but it certainly has some big challenges, especially right out of the gate and at the end. What worries me most is that the Pats will be vulnerable early in the season. They always blow a game in September, but this year they’ll be figuring […]
