Still reeling from yesterday’s loss, and it still hurts now as much as it did then. Don’t expect much positive stuff this week, I can’t sugarcoat it. Here are the ups and downs from Week 7.
Ups ⬆️
Jakobi Meyers
Yes, my only up from yesterday is the performance by Meyers. Now, it wasn’t anything special that will go down in Patriots folklore, but, in a game where the Patriots offense couldn’t do anything, Meyers made some nice catches and was one of the few to actually get open for both quarterbacks.
Downs ⬇️
Cam Newton
A Halloween horror show performance by Newton has really thrown the whole season into doubt. Cam went 9/15 98 yards, 3 interceptions before being benched for Stidham in the fourth quarter.
Now the receiving core didn’t help him out at all by failing to find space, but Cam had an awful game, and I’m worried he’s begun to get inside his own head, his post-game media conferences both yesterday and today were less than reassuring. The starting job is still his, for now.
Julian Edelman
Jules is still missing and I’m beginning to wonder if we’ll see anywhere near the performance he showed against Seattle in Week 2 again. The Wiley vet won’t give up, but you know things are bad when Jules can’t help bail out the offense.
Defensive Line
The 49ers rushed for just shy of 200 yards and scored four rushing touchdowns against a Patriots defensive front which was unable to do anything to stop the onslaught. This was one of the key areas that needed help, Beau Allen is back in practice, but I don’t think he will lead a turnaround to suddenly enable the positional group to stop the run. They’ve shown signs of good play in the opening six games, but they simply have to be better.
Ja’Whaun Bentley
Struggled a bunch against the 49ers O line and put in a disappointing performance, especially given how well he played last week against Denver. Consistency is key for Bentley, we need him to lead the already stricken linebacker unit.
