I didn’t want to get my hopes up about the Patriots re-acquiring Marty Bennett after he was released by Green Bay. It seemed like another team higher in the waiver priority would make a claim on him, if not just to make sure he didn’t go to the Patriots.
But alas, Adam Schefter reported that the Patriots did in fact claim Bennett, bringing him back to where he won a Super Bowl last season.
Former Packers’ TE Martellus Bennett claimed on waivers by the New England Patriots, per source.

It’s a much needed jolt of reinforcement that the Patriots really needed. Were they still doing okay without Julian Edelman? Sure, but recent injuries to Chris Hogan and an unknown timetable if Malcolm Mitchell could return have left them extra thin. The additional struggles to finish off drive with touchdowns only made bringing back Bennett that much more of a slam dunk.
Now what exactly happened in Green Bay is still a wonder. Bennett recently announced this would be his last season. Now that he’s back in New England is that still the case? And how healthy is he since the Packers cut him saying he failed to disclose something. Basically, there’s still a lot going on here with Bennett and I’ll be holding my breath until we see him back in blue and on the field playing for the Pats.
We just don’t know exactly where his head is at. Hopefully he’ll speak with the media soon and clear some things up so we can fully focus on what kind of impact he can make.
But the ramifications of getting Bennett back would rocket the Pats back as Super Bowl favorites if he can be the kind of player he was last season. Most people thought the Pats would never win a Super Bowl without Rob Gronkowski, but Bennett’s all-around solid play proved that notion false.
Bennett had a good, calm energy and fit in surprisingly well considering New England isn’t always a friendly home to free spirits like Marty is. It’s exciting to have him back and it’s the kind of energy injection the team could really benefit from.
The Gronk-Marty duo never met their incredible potential last season, but suddenly they’re going to get a second chance.
