The Patriots welcomed back the remaining members of the PUP squad meaning that they’ll open the season with no one getting a free pass behind the scenes until Week 6. Cyrus Jones, Jonathan Jones and Nate Ebner all returned to practice, donning full pads meaning their time being physically unable to perform were coming to an end.
For the Joneses, it’s a good sign that they’re back before the first preseason game. Jonathan could insert himself into the slot conversation over rookie Duke Dawson, while Cyrus faces a make or break year where the Pats could really use his punt return ability. He’s a bit of a wild card as a cornerback, especially with a loaded depth chart but maybe just maybe he could be a factor.
As for Ebner, he’s just about a roster lock for his special team prowess and is a good presence to have back on the field for Bill Belichick’s favorite phase of the game.
More on the brewing battles and what went down at Tuesday’s practice in the Tweets of Note.

Is it just me or has the media rolled the Patriots winter of discontent right into training camp. Yes, everything seems fine after Brady and Gronk didn’t volunteer to go to voluntary workouts, but IS IT REALLY FINE!
AND ALSO… Why haven’t practices been more intense? Why aren’t there joint practices? Where’s all the hitting been? Yeah Edelman looks amazing considering he tore his ACL less than a year ago, but does he really look as amazing as before? Is Bill Belichick trying to be more fun? Do Brady-Belichick-Kraft still need an electrolyte water summit? Why could they possibly be resting 41-year-old Tom Brady so much? And so on…
Sometimes I feel like I’m on a different planet than those who cover this team professionally. I remain nothing but excited about this season and really don’t see much different than any of the other last 11 years I’ve blogged exclusively about the team. They have some depth issues at some spots as all teams always do and some uncertainty at other spots. Both of those translate into potentially relying on new and unproven guys and what I’ve always seen is that no one in the league is better at coaching new and unproven guys and teaching them how to play winning NFL football.
And who knows, maybe they’ll stay healthy in all the key spots and end the season playing in the Super Bowl like they did THREE OF THE LAST FOUR YEARS. Sigh. Please just tell me you’re enjoying this run and not already pissing your pants that it’s all falling apart before your eyes.
Here are a few tweets that stood out. To be honest I’m getting laser-focused on the game. Gameplan comes tomorrow!
Braxton Berrios made a nice catch in 11v11s. Richards got a hand on the Etling throw, but Berrios still made the diving catch. Later in practice, he made a nice catch over Crossen, who had tight coverage.

Get ready for Berrios fever to strike Patriots Nation hard. Once fans get a look at his little strut in preseason, and likely some dynamic plays, they’re gonne be hooked on him being the next Edelman, despite the fact that he’s buried even behind Riley McCarron on the depth chart right now. He could still make a push though and it will start Thursday night.
Etling got off to a rough start. Coaches threw him into the fire vs. 1st team defense. But he settled in and had some nice moments. Best throw was on a corner route to Berrios, fit it into a tight window.

Also get ready for a bunch of Hoyer and Etling Thursday.
The #Patriots continue to check out top available free agents, working out FA CB Bashaud Breeland today, source said. Would be an intriguing addition.

Are the other NFL teams even trying? This is a starting caliber CB and the Patriots are STACKED at the position.

Edelman had some drops today and has admitted he’s not quite back where he wants to be yet. I didn’t really expect him to be back to 100 percent yet and the fact that he’s been a full-go, without a knee brace, in roughly the same amount of time since the same injury as Cyrus Jones, who just came off PUP, is remarkable. Edelman looked confident with people around his legs, making short awkward cuts and showing no noticeable hesitation. Plus he has four weeks off to start the season.
It will take some time to get Edelman back to game speed, but in the big picture, that should happen well before the playoffs if he continues this trajectory. Again, big picture folks. There’s just not a whole heck of a lot to shit your pants about or complain about right now. Enjoy it.
