After taking offensive tackle Antonio Garcia 85th overall, the Patriots took another athletic blind sider in Conor McDermott at 211th overall.
Like Nate Solder before him, McDermott is a former tight end who’s also 6′ 8″. He’s athletic but “thin-legged” and scouts worry about him being able to hold up to NFL power.
He’ll work with Dante Scarnecchia for at least a year, but it’s good to know that with the retirement of Sebastian Vollmer and Solder entering the final year of his year there’s two good athletic prospects in the pipeline.
Maybe McDermott is never anything more than the third swing tackle, who comes on in goal line packages. From there he might even start catching passes again.
His career will depend on whether or not he gets stronger and can handle the power of NFL defensive linemen.
From NFL.com:
Towering left tackle. Has experience in a pro-style attack. Gets into kick-slide without much laboring. Decent pass-slide quickness. Decent hand readiness. In run game, comes off ball with flat back and uncorks his hips into target. Generates some pop with his initial contact as run blocker. Has some redirect power to stuff stunts inside. Solid cut-blocker. Athletic feet with rare background. Was finalist for McDonald’s High School All-American team as a senior basketball player and won Mr. Basketball for Division II-AA in Tennessee.
Weaknesses
Very little bubble with below-average leg thickness
HOLY HOODIE is it the RETURN OF CRAZY LEGS!?
