I want to say I’m surprised by the result today, but in all honesty, I’m not. We knew things were going to be different, there was a mix of excitement and trepidation when training camp started, but now, the wheels of this team are beginning to show signs of decay.
And this isn’t just about Tom Brady. Yep, it hurts a bunch when Bill suffers his worst home loss since he took over as head coach in 2000, and Brady slings 350+ for 4 touchdowns. But this is about the Patriots in 2020, and it’s important to look forward, not back.
The offense is currently non-existent, Cam has had two terrible games since he returned from the COVID list, I barely knew Edelman was in the game, and the team can’t stop turning the ball over. The defense has shown flashes of brilliance in some weeks, and signs of concern in others.
Next Sunday is the tipping point, if the team loses to Buffalo, we could see a big ‘FOR SALE’ sign outside the Patriots locker room, the team in all seriousness could start to offload talent to stock up on capital for the forthcoming draft in 2021. Now, I’m not saying the team is going to tank, Bill would never do that, but we could see some urgency forced into the transition period of this team.
I think there is only so much the coaches can do to paint over the cracks of this team’s lack of star-power offensive talent, I don’t think the team can get anyone to turn around this season by November 3. Right now, I think we will just have to endure the rest of the campaign with what we have.
One final thought, although Bill did publicly back Newton today in the post-game presser, another game like this could be his last in a Pats uniform.
