After watching a couple games of youtube cutups for Tavon Wilson I got a little bit of a sense of what the Patriots might’ve seen in him. Of course the sample size is incredibly small so take this as a very general barometer.
Though he was called a safety it looks to me like Tavon Wilson is really a slot corner in the NFL. One thing I noticed was that he consistently had good break on the quick in-breaking slants. You know, the only pass Mark Sanchez can almost-consistently complete and the one Ryan Fitzpatrick can consistently complete only until November.
He seemed more quick than fast, but played some gunner on special teams. He was also used occasionally as a blitzer.
It didn’t seem like he was ever in a deep safety role, but again the sample size is small. When he was at safety I saw him coming down hill on the slot right at the first down marker.
Perhaps of most interest was the physical play, including a highlight reel flawless tackle that blew up a running back before he could get the edge.
Take it with a grain of salt, but it seems like the kind of guy who would save us from having to use Edelman in the slot in 2012, and have some position flexibility if needed elsewhere in the secondary. Ultimately they can move him around and see where he is most comfortable and best suited, then see how he fits.
