Sounds like it was a quiet practice after expectations were high for the first day of pads. Hopefully that means tomorrow, when your faithful blogger will be credentialed, will be a really up tempo and physical practice. That’s the kind of practice I’d love to get a close look at.
In the meantime here are some tweets that stood out to me from today.
Maybe the lightest 1st day of pads I’ve ever witnessed. Very little full on competition today.
— Michael Giardi (@MikeGiardi) July 29, 2017
Again, hopefully just setting the stage for things to go down tomorrow.
Also, Matt Patricia lost his damn mind on the defense after 11s. Overall, though, not much intensity today. Not many competitive drills.
— Kevin Duffy (@KevinRDuffy) July 29, 2017
Bring the intensity tomorrow, defense!
Mike Gillislee showed his power on two goal-line touchdowns. He ran over Devin McCourty for his first and followed Develin/Solder for 2nd.
— Jeff Howe (@jeffphowe) July 29, 2017
I’ve been waiting for a guy like Gillislee for a few seasons now. Nothing against Blount, but he needed a head of steam to truly do his damage. I want a guy who can make something out of nothing and get those hard short yards.
Garoppolo-Cooks connected for a deep TD. Cooks beat Harmon-Ebner so badly that he slowed to catch an underthrown ball and still had space.
— Jeff Howe (@jeffphowe) July 29, 2017
Getting the feeling the Pats won’t show much of what they truly have planned with Cooks, especially not during the preseason games or joint practice sessions. His speed is as advertised. I didn’t need a scouting degree to tell you that from limited looks at the first two practices.
With Rob Ninkovich out for a third straight day, Geneo Grissom continues to see reps with the 1st team defense.
— Kevin Duffy (@KevinRDuffy) July 29, 2017
Still a developing story and if/when Nink does hang them up you wonder if Grissom really is the guy there. Probably helpful to have him in there now since he’s been here a few years, but I’d think Flowers, Ealy and Rivers would be the top trio once things get real and everyone is acclimated. We’ll see, Grissom could be one of those guys thrust into a new role, and he’s someone that no one talked about at all this offseason.
Amendola, Mitchell and David Jones were in uniform but spent most of the day running on lower field
— Paul Perillo (@pfwpaul) July 29, 2017
I like the Pats’ proactive stance with guys who have had injury issues in the past. But Jones can’t afford to miss much time. He’s one of the guys I wanted to watch this summer but his chances to make the team fade with every practice he misses.
Brandon Bolden left practice early and didn’t come back
— Mark Daniels (@MarkDanielsPJ) July 29, 2017
I really wonder if this is the year Bolden gets replaced, possibly by Burkhead who could pick up his special teams snaps and contribute more at running back. I know Bolden is beloved by many teammates and fans so this will be one to watch.
Pads came on and Brandin Cooks is still lightning fast. Split a double team for a long TD from Garoppolo
— Mark Daniels (@MarkDanielsPJ) July 29, 2017
God I can’t wait to see Cooks in a real game.
Tom Brady’s lone incompletion today occurred because Jordan Richards broke up a pass for Gronk. Richards has 2 INTs, 2 PBUs in camp.
— Jeff Howe (@jeffphowe) July 29, 2017
Wow Brady. And good for Jordan Richards making plays. He needed a big camp and so far he’s showing up. Will keep an eye on him tomorrow.
More D Lewis: Says the difference now being in camp one year removed from injury is not even thinking about the leg anymore, just football.
— Stephania Bell (@Stephania_ESPN) July 29, 2017
I beat this drum a lot — that guys coming off an ACL injury aren’t truly themselves until they’re two years from the injury. Hopefully Lewis looks like he did in early 2015 when the Pats essentially made him their bellcow back (as much as they would ever do that these days).
Brissett has shown a nice chemistry with Carr — that’ll be a combination to look for in the second half of preseason games this summer.
— Christopher Price (@cpriceNFL) July 29, 2017
Something to watch during scrub time during the preseason.
Will be checking in early and often from my credentialed day tomorrow. Excited to report back on the experience!

Nice , concise article … but why no mention of being credentialed ?

Thanks. Credentialed for Sunday. Plenty forthcoming there.
