The first trades for teams to begin moving around in this year’s Draft started at the end of last week, and it’s made me think even more about what might happen on night one of the Draft.
So, it leaves the question on the lips of a lot of Patriots fans, should they trade up and take a QB?
The answer for me, is yes.
Firstly, let’s take a look at what happened with the mega trades last Friday –
The 49ers gave up a lot of capital to get themselves within touching distance of one of the top QB prospects this year, then, the Eagles got a future first-rounder by trading back with Miami to allow them back into the top ten of the first round.
What this tells me is that the Eagles are out of wanting a QB that early, Miami is still within distance if one becomes available, and the 49ers are in prime position to take Jimmy G’s replacement for the future.
Another thing to remember is that San Francisco probably offered this deal to NY for the number two pick, with no movement there, I feel it’s safe to say that the Jets are set to take a QB with that selection, so look out for Darnold to be moving on before the start of the season.
As much as I want Zach Wilson in a Patriots jersey, his impressive throwing session last Friday has all but confirmed his place as the second-top QB in the Draft behind Lawrence, Pats won’t even get a sniff at him. With two QB’s off the board with the first two picks, I think the 49ers will panic and take Fields to ensure their blockbuster trade with Miami wasn’t for nothing.
Now, I’m looking to Atlanta as a potential trade partner for the Patriots at number four, yes it’s high, but I think if you (Bill Belichick) like any of the QB’s left, you need to go for it, I also think that Detroit and Carolina could take a passer if one was available.
TSM’s QB Mock– (in order of QB selections)
1- Trevor Lawrence – JAX
2- Zach Wilson – NYJ
3- Justin Fields – SF
4- Trey Lance/Mac Jones – NE?
At the end of the day, anything could happen on night one of the Draft, the Pats could take an OT, WR, CB, LB before a QB that is really in their range becomes available. Should the Patriots trade up? – Absolutely. They may not be in this position again for some time.
