But a hundred years from now when we’re sitting around during TV timeouts of the Hunger Games, we’ll be talking about one thing: “We’ll Take the Wind.” Just the gutsiest, most self-assured move in a career full of them. Where Belichick just hung his titanium testicles out in the wind and if Denver had marched down and punched it in, the whole nation would be standing in line for their chance to kick him in them with steel toed boots. It was 4th & 2 all over again only this time it won them the game. Like he told his team after that one, I made the call because I believe in you and I don’t apologize for it. And like the mics caught him saying on his “A Football Life,” “If we call this, we better fucking get it.” Well they got it. I just hope the country gives him as much credit this time as they friggin’ flambe’d him that time.

Let’s call this one Belichick’s Redemption. There’s something about Tom Brady-Peyton Manning matchups that turns Bill Belichick’s decision-making a little unconventional. In 2009, it was a fourth-and-2 call against the Colts that backfired in his face and led to weeks of criticism. Belichick decided to go for it from his 30, the play fell short, and Manning’s Colts promptly marched down the short field for the winning score. In Sunday night’s thriller, an unbelievable 34-31 comeback overtime win over the Broncos, Belichick again went against the grain with a major decision. The Patriots won the overtime coin toss, but instead of taking the kickoff, like 99.9 percent of NFL coaches do in that situation, Belichick took the wind.

Belichick’s decision to take the wind was lauded by defensive back Devin McCourty, one of the captains responsible for notifying the referee of the decision to bypass the chance to receive. “Bill’s a genius,” McCourty said. “Even the captains were like, ‘Really? Defer?’ He wanted to take the wind. Obviously that was the best call.”

You can be in whatever you want to be in but if they have a play to beat it and it’s well-executed, which it frequently is with Denver, you’re just playing right into their hands. “They’ve waiting all day to run the play against that situation. You tell them, ‘Here we are, we’re going to be in Cover-2 zone, go ahead run your best play.’ Well, they will. We’re going to be in “man-free” or we’re going to be in blitz or we’re going to be in “man-under 2-deep,” what are you going to do about it? Well, they can usually do something about it. I don’t really think anybody has had a lot of success playing that way.

Peyton does a tremendous job of getting in good plays and making good decisions, taking what’s there, what the defense allows you to have and he’s very, very accurate with the ball. Everybody is just going to have to do their job. You can’t just shut down one guy. I don’t think that will even come anywhere close to stopping them, they have way too many people that will kill you.
