Boston Herald/Borges: Changing times always seem to fit the Bill
A little bit of insight into the base front switch this season.
“There are so many things now (offensively) you didn’t see in the 1970s and the ’80s,” Belichick said before last night’s season-opening 38-24 win against the Miami Dolphins [team stats]. “With so many formations today it makes it harder on the defense. The tight end is most often another receiver, not a blocker. One-back formations proliferate, and often it’s empty (backfields, with only the quarterback behind the line). All hell broke loose 20 years ago. Today, half the plays are with three or more wide receivers on the field, so half the time you’ve got more than four defensive backs on the field. Half the time (last year) we had five.”

We have a saying around here, ‘It doesn’t matter how you get here, it’s what you do here,’” Belichick explained last week. “I think that’s the way we should coach the team and I think that’s what the players expect. That goes for everybody. Nobody is on a scholarship, everybody has to earn their keep. It’s a competitive situation, I think that brings out the best in everybody. [It] brings out the best in guys that are established that they’re being pushed [and] it brings out the best from guys who aren’t established, who know they have an opportunity. Competition is competition. That’s just basing on what the performance is, all that is decided on the field.

INSPIRATION: BILL BELICHICK
Reason: Anybody can work hard, but not everyone works smart. I believe Bill Belichick is the poster child for working smart. A true outlier, Belichick preaches ‘learning by doing’ and mastering a craft by repetition. I love this particular photo of BB because it captured him at an early point of his career taking his job very seriously.
