Since 2008, there have been 20 receivers with more than 65 targets of at least 21 yards downfield. The only one not to drop a deep ball? Brandon Lloyd (88 targets).
Over the past two seasons, with Josh McDaniels as his head coach or primary offensive coordinator, Lloyd was the most targeted receiver on throws deeper than 20 yards downfield, with 73 such targets.
Calvin Johnson was second with 64.
Lloyd has done this with Kyle Orton, Tim Tebow, Sam Bradford, A.J. Feeley and Kellen Clemens as his quarterbacks.
Lloyd’s quarterback this year is Tom Brady. And his offensive coordinator is Josh McDaniels.
If you take Lloyd’s numbers when playing under Josh McDaniels (average of 4.74 catches per game; 78.9 yards per game), you could project a 75-catch, 1,262-yard season if he plays all 16 regular-season games. If you want to factor in Tom Brady is throwing him the ball this year – and there are a lot of other weapons on the field that defenses must account for – it could be reason to increase that projection.

Per the chart that was whipped up by Steve Palazzolo of Pro Football Focus, Lloyd’s numbers in both the intermediate and deep routes the last two seasons are impressive, and will provide a serious boost to the Patriots’ offense. It’s just sometimes a matter of, it doesn’t really look like he’s open then – boom – he springs open on you,” Brady explained. “Sometimes you think he’s covered and you get off him and then you watch the film and you’re like, ‘How did he get open?’ He knows what he’s doing to set the guy up and he makes the move and you gotta trust that he’s gonna beat the guy and he does. It’s just a matter of, ‘Don’t let your eyes take away from what he’s doing in his route’ because you know he’s gonna get open at some point.

He’s got a unique skill set so it’s going to take some time to get used to things that he does really well. We haven’t had anyone quite like him, so just to understand where he likes the ball placed and how he gets open. He’s a very good player, so we’ve got a lot of work ahead in training camp and we’re going to have to use every single practice and every rep really wisely, because he can be a big part of this offense if we can really get up to speed.

Was up late last night watching every bit of film on Garoppolo I could find and I think his quick release is special. Does he need time to develop? Sure. But like Mallett, he has a unique skill that I think made him especially intriguing to Belichick. His arm reminds me somewhat of Russell Wilson. […]
