Justin Houston, Dontari Poe leading Kansas City Chiefs’ pass rush revival | The MMQB with Peter King
Pats ranking 27th in MMQB’s pass rush metrics. We could queue up the “yeah but they wanted to keep the QBs contained” argument, but there are no excuses against Matt Ryan and the Falcons this week. They’ve got to get after him.
Nice read from Oliver Thomas about the Pats’ single safety look vs. the Buccaneers. I’ve been back through the first half of All-22 and outside of this package they were mixing things up a little more on the back end and up front in this one.
In the first couple weeks we saw a lot of Cover 1 Robber. Clearly BB likes what he’s seeing from his trio of starting corners playing man coverage and that allowed him to use the single safety look.
Ah yes, the old “they haven’t beaten anybody yet” argument. Look, I’m not going to say they’ve faced a great QB yet, but how many great QBs are there really in the NFL? 5-10 tops?
And let’s look back at the QBs who have put up over 300 yards passing in the last three seasons:
So I think the big takeaway is that by just shutting two rookie QBs and an about-to-be-benched one, and doing what they’re supposed to do, that qualifies as progress.
In three games this season, opponents have scored 34 points against the Patriots, which is impressive (and also the fewest allowed by the Patriots through three games since 1979). But then when considering that seven of those points came on a fumble return for a touchdown, while another seven came after an interception deep in their own territory, it reflects well on the defense. One theme that was heard after Sunday’s win was how having so many returning players has helped the unit start at a higher point in 2013.

Sub vs. base defensive breakdown – New England Patriots Blog – ESPN Boston
Here’s how it’s looked this year…
And how it’s looked the last three years…
2010: Sub 57%, Base 40%
2011: Sub 63.2%, Base 34.3%
2012: Sub 57.4%, Base 39.4%
52.5 yards per game. The difference in passing yards allowed through nine games in 2012 vs. nine games in 2013. The Patriots preach team defense more than just about anyone, but it’s hard not to look at the this year’s pass defense numbers against last season and not credit the work of the secondary. Through […]
