TEC mike drop at the end of this one. Bravo!
deflategate
This wasn’t an investigation, it was a prosecution.
Great stuff from Florio here (I can’t believe I just typed that).

Forbes: ESPN’s Uncomfortable, Unnerving Relationship With The NFL
Forbes: ESPN’s Uncomfortable, Unnerving Relationship With The NFL
Nothing we haven’t been following since 11 of 12 here, but it’s put into a nice package, pointing out where the allegiances lie. I’d be surprised if you see any insider interviews or information coming from the Patriots via ESPN any time soon, that’s for sure.
Roger Goodell’s insistence on acting as emperor makes the NFL vulnerable to a legal smackdown
Roger Goodell’s insistence on acting as emperor makes the NFL vulnerable to a legal smackdown
Sally Jenkins drops another bomb on the commish. Here’s the money paragraph:
The “why is he doing this?” question still lingers; Goodell’s motive in pursuing Brady so hard with such a weak case is the fascinating question. The answer seems to be based in personality, a vain self-conception and tone deafness that make him incapable of admitting mistakes or cutting his losses. He has staked his personal power and credibility on the legal argument that if he wants to suspend Brady for life and fine him a billion dollars, his authority still supersedes that of a federal judge, who has no right to interfere.
Peyton Manning feared Patriots bugging visitors’ locker room
Peyton Manning feared Patriots bugging visitors’ locker room
Yup, it’s time for every rumor of nefarious Patriots activity to come out, isn’t it?This is what Deflategate is really about – not so much deflated footballs, but the perception that the Patriots bend every rule and take every advantage possible to help them win. I’ve heard all the rumors, that QB communications would mysteriously drop out, that the tarp would be taken off early back when the Gillette Stadium surface was still grass among others, and now we can add bugging the locker room.
We are so inside the rest of the NFL’s heads, and now, unfortunately, we’re paying the price, whether any of it is true or not. And really, it doesn’t even need to be true to be effective and this is a prime example. Because instead of focusing on the game, even Peyton Manning has to spend time worrying that his conversations might not be private. That’s winning the battle before it’s fought.
So as much as the Tom Brady haters want to pretend all the vitriol is based on an imperceptible amount of ball pressure that had no effect on the outcome of a game, it’s about all these rumors over the years. Spygate had nothing to do with Brady, but it’s still thrown in our face about him being a “cheater”.
Deflategate was finally something guys like Mike Kensil thought they had caught the Patriots red-handed with. It didn’t matter how inconsequential and unprovable it was. The second they thought they “had” the Patriots, there was no going back. They were going to make sure Belichick was nailed to the wall for it.
That’s where Deflategate failed in the eyes of those who wanted it to be real so badly, they really wanted it to be pinned on Belichick and that’s why you still hear echoes of that from sources through the media. They see Belichick as the mastermind but in Deflategate they had to settle for Brady.
And it looks like even that is going to backfire on them.
How fun it is to be the big bad wolf of the NFL.

Still no predicting which way the Judge will rule but it’s nice to see the NFL’s case get torn to shreds before their very eyes.
WEEI/Jerry Thornton: 8 ways Patriots defenders have been proven right
WEEI/Jerry Thornton: 8 ways Patriots defenders have been proven right
Nobody can sum it up better than Jerry Thornton, but the problem is that there’s a huge population of “fans” who checked out right after Mort’s 11 of 12 report. As far as they were consider Tom Brady was a cheater at that point and nothing he could say would change their opinion. Of course, they then poked their heads up when they heard he “destroyed” his cell phone and said “Yup, Mort was right, what a cheater”.
Now with each new bit of evidence that comes out, you know where the NFL is caught red-handed putting out false information to smear Brady’s credibility, those fans who already decided he was guilty are “tired of deflategate”. They wonder why Brady won’t just accept four games so they don’t have to hear about Deflategate anymore because it’s clogging their sports-watching enjoyment or something.
The problem for them is Deflategate is just getting started. I think it’s about 65-35 that Brady’s suspension gets thrown out by Judge Berman and then we’ll start in on the NFL’s appeals.
Those who are sick of Deflategate better start paying attention again because, as Jerry lays out, this hasn’t just been the same old stuff recycled over and over. It’s a near-constant barrage of new information and each new bit makes the NFL look vindictive, petty and agenda-driven.
That’s the real controversy of Deflategate.
