The #Patriots hype machine is starting in motion for the next great pass rush savior Mark Anderson. I’m still excited to see what Andre Carter brings to the table as well. And we can’t forget about Eric Moore either. Should be an interesting battle for RDE.

Eric Moore – 34 OLB cut up
So many people are saying Eric Moore is “under the radar” that I think it’s time to officially move him onto the radar. Moore showed a lot in a short amount of time last season, to the point where he was starting with Rob Ninkovich at OLB over Cunningham (fighting an injury) and TBC (fighting his inability to stop the run).
If Markell Carter has real potential at OLB (which is a big if) and Moore continues to develop, TBC could very well find himself looking for work.

‘You have to understand, coach Belichick is a mastermind at football and putting guys in the right positions (to succeed),’ said Moore, when reached yesterday in Atlanta. ‘Trust me, where there’s a will, there’s a way, and he’ll find it. He’ll find a way of making players better. So I have to give it up to him. Hopefully, I’m one of those guys he looks forward to working with in the future.’

[Eric Moore] is an interesting player when it comes to the Patriots’ 2011 roster. He is 30 years old, joined the club in December and played a variety of roles – rush end, outside linebacker, defensive end in the 3-4. He started three games because of some injuries. Bill Belichick was asked about Moore on the final day of the draft and said: “He came in here at the end of the year at the tail end of the season and was able to contribute. I don’t think that’s the easiest thing to do. A player has got to have some things going for him to be able to do that. It would be nice to work with him through an entire season – whether it’s minicamp, training camp, whatever it happens to be, and give him an opportunity from the beginning, and see if that is helpful to their performance and production.”

Yesterday I finally brought myself to rewatch the first half of the Patriots playoff debacle against the Jets. Only the defensive series.
During the season I always enjoyed going back on Tuesday and evaluating what the defense did without the emotion. Well it took me about a month to be able to watch this one without emotion, but I’m glad I did.
So it might be a little late for a full on defensive analysis but I think there’s something to be taken from who played. These was no room for error or experimentation so clearly whoever was playing were the players BB most believed in.
So anyway, here are just some quick hit thoughts…
Second half observations coming when I can stomach watching it all fall apart…
One player that was not yet on the Patriots the last time they faced the Jets, and has made a real impact in the teams four games since is Eric Moore.
With Jermaine Cunningham still fighting a calf injury it’s likely that Moore could see significant time in the base 3-4 defense, as a designated pass rusher, or even as a defensive end.
The fact is that Moore is one player that the Jets won’t know quite what to expect from, making him a definite presence that must be accounted for.
Since joining the Pats off the street Moore has registered two sacks and two forced fumbles. He’s been used in a variety of ways, mostly due to injuries, so as to what his true strength is we, along with the Jets, can only guess.
At 6’ 4" and 268 pounds Moore physically looks like an ideal outside linebacker for the Patriots system. With 14 tackles and 1 pass defensed to go with his sacks and forced fumbles he’s clearly been a force since he was signed on December 3rd.
Though he is fighting a hamstring injury that kept him out of a practice last week, we hope that he’ll be ready to go Sunday. BB can employ him in a number of different ways, giving him a versatile player to confuse the Jets with.
Here are some stats from the ProFootballFocus guys… In stark contrast to the Colts, Brady didn’t have an O-lineman avoid a positive grade, with Dan Koppen (+3.9)having the strongest day, comfortably handling the Colts’ defensive tackles all day long. Jermaine Cunningham (+3.0)had a fine game, with positive scores in both the run game and rushing the passer. Cunningham […]
