BB & Jamie Collins
jamie collins
Another day, another forced fumble for linebacker Jamie Collins. This time he got fullback Ben Bartholomew. This has been an area of strength for Collins in the early goings of camp.

Fast, athletic linebacker? Yes, please.

Top draft pick Jamie Collins arrived from Southern Mississippi with a reputation as a versatile player from having played safety, off-the-line linebacker and defensive end over his college career. He’s worked at linebacker in training camp and hasn’t taken part in 1-on-1 pass-rush drills. Entering camp, I wondered if he might factor into the nickel rusher mix, but that hasn’t manifested itself at this point.

Jamie understands how to play the deep ball because he played safety. I’m expected big things if a running back runs a wheel route on him. It’s stuff like that that’s a plus for us. That’s a plus for him. To put it that way. That he’s seen the game in so many different views that he understands it a lot better. I just have to figure out how to explain certain things to get it across, but once he gets a grasp on it, once he gets a few reps, he’s functional. He can go out and do it.

Collins, taken with the Patriots’ first pick in the draft at 52d overall, practiced subbing in and out of the first team defense. He was looked at from all different linebacker positions, and extensively worked dropping back into coverage for most of practice, not spending as much time working on the pass rush. He looked strong on defending the passes that came his way, and made a tackle after the catch on tight end Zach Sudfeld

The Patriots’ first selection of the 2013 draft, outside linebacker Jamie Collins could wind up a star in this defense… if he continues the career arc he demonstrated after signing with Southern Miss as an oversized safety. The highly athletic Collins has all of the physical traits to develop but remains quite raw. Belichick hasn’t been shy about gambling on athleticism – especially on the defensive side of the ball – throughout his career. He could win big with Collins.

Interesting stuff here, not sure how “insider” it really is because it seems like just about everyone calls themselves an “insider” these days. But dissension in the ranks is something we’ve heard rumblings about before, namely when BB overrode his scouts to pick Chad Jackson… Hopefully these picks turn out differently. But it’s probably not much of a stretch to think that the scouts had similar opinions to the scouts and drafnitks online who were thrown off by the Collins pick and especially the Harmon one. As always, BB will do what BB wants.
Collins is a much better fit on the outside of a 3-4 alignment versus the 4-3 scheme run by the Patriots. Our understanding is many of the Patriots scouts felt the same way and graded Collins as a last day pick. I’ve heard there was a lot of disagreement over this pick on Friday of the draft as many of the team’s scouts feel Collins is primarily a north defender and will need a lot of work playing in reverse. He possesses the physical talent but does Collins have the fire and aptitude to play in a more complexdefensive scheme?
