I think Dont’a Hightower is a perfect fit form a football player standpoint. The versatility he brings and the toughness, the understanding of playing multiple complex schemes. Where does he fit exactly in this scheme? That remains to be seen, but you know (the Patriots) have a plan for him. They plan a four-man front, a three-man front, they’ve got some linebackers that they move around. I think Hightower comes in right away and contributes on early downs.

Dont’a Hightower Draft Profile – NFL.com
Strengths
Hightower is lengthy and imposing in the middle of a defense. He has long arms that he uses effectively to fight off blockers, dip and push to avoid trash at his feet, and keep balls close to him. He is not the most athletic player in space, but he uses his arms to tie up receivers within his zone and fight tight ends off the ball. He is technically sound, although his style of play looks effortless. There are not many wasted motions in his movements, and he takes good angles to the ball when working both sides of the field. Although Hightower doesn’t quite possess the speed to be a true sideline-to-sideline inside linebacker or the sole tackler in the middle of a 3-4 defense, he uses his instincts well and remains in position.
Chandler Jones Draft Profile – NFL.com
Strengths: Jones is undersized but has the tools to stay on the line at the next level and work mostly out of a 5-technique position, as he excels at working in short areas and being a scrappy, active player in the box. He has a good wingspan and is a long strider, which gives him great range to run down outside runs. He uses his arms well to keep linemen at bay, and he displays good technique to defeat blocks through hand fighting. He is an effective tackler with a lot of range. Although Chandler tends to get upright immediately at the point of attack, he is a good pass rusher who plays to his strengths.
[Hightower] really plays with great aggression. You watch that national championship game and just study what he does in that football game from the first to the fourth quarter and you’ll see exactly why Belichick targeted Hightower with this pick.

Patriots trade up again and select Dont’a Hightower
What in the world is going on, two trade ups!??! For those of you who have been paying attention you know I didn’t see the Hightower fit for the Pats because he seemed too much like Spikes.
But there’s no question he’s a talented linebacker and I will be extremely curious to see how the Pats plan to use him. Whether it’s in a rotation at middle linebacker or even as an outside linebacker.
But just because yours truly didn’t see a fit doesn’t mean I’m not excited about it now. The fact is that the Patriots have improved their defense immensely in the last two hours. It’s pretty much everything a Pats fan could ask for.
There’s no question now, the Pats have one of the most talented young linebacking squads in the NFL now. I don’t know how it will all come together, but I can’t wait to find out.
It’s the first of the Throwback games tomorrow as the Pats will don their classic red jerseys and white helmets against the Detroit Lions, who like the Patriots, sit 1-3 on the season, desperate to find their second victory.
