Taylor had plenty of positive things to say about fellow running back BenJarvus Green-Ellis. “Benny, he’s always here asking questions,” Taylor said. “He follows Kevin [Faulk] like he’s his baby brother — in at 6 [a.m.], doing all the things, conditioning early in the morning, weights throughout the season, conditioning after practice. He hits the hole extremely hard. He’s like me, always working on his pass-receiving. He’s improved in that area. He’s a guy that’s waiting on his opportunity. I think he deserves it. He sticks his head in there, he doesn’t spend a lot of time laterally, east and west. He’s always downhill when he’s running the ball. You’ll see him improve more the more opportunities, the more reps he gets in the game situations. He’s being patient, waiting for it.”
Asked how that compares to former Patriot Laurence Maroney’s work ethic, Taylor said: “Laurence, he had his — not quite the same. And this isn’t me throwing him under the bus. But he would work. It would take him a few snaps to kind of get him going. He would work when he felt there was a sense of urgency and a need to, as opposed to, ‘Let me make these deposits and then later I can go in and make a withdrawal and still have more.’ That wasn’t necessarily his mindset, like Kevin and Benny and Sammy [Morris] and a few other guys on the team, not just our position. That light switch, you have to turn it on and start getting the picture and grasping that concept, and that’s what we’ve been trying to instill in him. Hopefully, that switch comes on, and he won’t need anybody to push him that extra step. He can do it when the doors are closed and nobody’s watching. That’s what it takes to be special in this league.”

Look out, Donald!
New England travels to the Jets with a collection of offensive skill players who can cause some problems for the Jets. Everyone in the league will take shots down the field on the Jets’ defense, as it is vital to make big plays against this team. The Jets are not going to allow many 12-play drives, therefore it is vital to make big plays. The Patriots have a unique collection of tight ends, drafted with the Jets in mind. The Jets safeties do not match well on good receiving tight ends, and if the Pats protect they will make plays down the field.
I heard Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez this week say that everything is going to be fine with his team’s offense. And I am sure they will start off well Sunday against New England. But Sanchez must make plays in the game; he will have to take some chances and show mental toughness and leadership to win the game. These are the kinds of games in which only the strong survive – as evidenced by Tom Brady’s 7-1 road record against the Jets.
The Jets are the best screen defense in the league, which limited Baltimore from utilizing a huge portion of thier playbook. The Patriots are a quick-screen team that uses the outside screen to help defeat overload pressure. Last year in the Meadowlands, the Patriots had 197 yards in the first half, but failed to make plays in the red zone. –> Duss’ note: according to my research at Football Outsiders the Jets gave up more yards to the screen pass (10.9 avg) than anyone in 2009. Not sure where Lombardi’s gets his stats but this is one that I’m not so sure about.
» Speaking of the Meadowlands, I am told New Meadowlands stadium is very quiet, very sterile and does not provide the loud home field advantage that can enhance a pressure defense.
Alright folks, this is the one we’ve been waiting for all off-season. Yes, we all knew the Bengals would be a good week one test, but it was week two at the New York Jets that everyone had circled.
A month ago I wrote a quick blog about the four possible options for when the Pats – Jets met, and here we are at the “Guns Blazing” option. I fully expect the Jets to come out and play solid football, at least for the first quarter. This is a huge test for a Patriots team that could not win on the road last year, and this will be the most hostile stadium they play in this season. The good news is that the Patriots are healthy and confident, and appear more than ready to take on the team that was the talk of the off-season.

Patriots Schwag Hunt: Older-Than Vintage Satin Pats Jacket
A couple weeks ago I came across a similar satin jacket that I nabbed for a mere $10. I of course didn’t share that one on my schwag hunt because yes, I keep the best schwag for myself.
This jacket is a one of a kind, and I’m not just talking about the fact that “WOLF” is embroidered on the left tit. You’re not going to find another one like this and it’s only at $19 right now. Get on it!
