Of Patrick Chung’s 16 snaps, 14 come on the final three drives when the outcome was well in hand. He has really fallen out of favor when all players are healthy, as rookie Tavon Wilson is playing over him in the dime. Chung is essentially a special teamer and depth option at this point, which is a hard fall for the 2009 second-round draft choice who opened the year as a starter.

Here’s some of what Rodney Harrison had to say about Chung in this one:
They’ll give you three or four years. If you’re lucky, they’ll give you four years. That’s if you’re lucky,” said Harrison. “After 2-3 years, if you’re not getting better, and it’s getting to a point where they feel like you can’t really be the great player they want you to be, they’ll go in a different direction. “If they’re willing to spend $6-7-8 million dollars a year on a safety, if you haven’t been out there, and you’re not what they think you should be, I mean, you’ve got to be dominant for that type of money from the Patriots,” Harrison went on. “And if you’re not there, you’re not going to get it. They’ll go out and get somebody else. That’s the harsh reality.”
I was a big fan of Chung at the start of his career and I’ve always loved his aggression, but I think the problem we’ve found is that he just doesn’t excel in one area.
He’s pretty good at a number of things, but he doesn’t have the size to be a dominant in-the-box safety, and he doesn’t have the range or instincts to be dominant on the back end. He’s been tried in the slot a bit too and that’s definitely not his best fit.
Barring a major turn around in both play and healthy I can’t see the Patriots going overboard to re-sign Chung this off-season. I like his leadership, but ultimately it looks like he’s a third safety at best.
S Patrick Chung was by far the Patriots’ best defender on the field against the Saints. He was terrific in coverage (even against TE Jimmy Graham), provided strong run support and looked sure in his assignments. Chung has had a terrific camp to this point. The hope now is that he stays healthy and delivers during a contract year.

Good news on Patchung! Maybe I’ll have to start switching my allegiances back to him as my favorite player from Spikes since Spikes has been MIA yet again. Or maybe we’ll just go with Hightower and start anew? Picking favorites is so tough to do.

Glad to see Chung setting the tone for this contract year already.

I was one of the first people to be on the Patchung bandwagon but I’m having mixed feelings about him these days and all the talk of him potentially deserving of a long term lucrative deal has left me scratching my head. There’s no question he has the leadership and work ethic that is vital to the Patriots but his injury history and average-at-best play makes me think this has to be a huge year for Chung.
What I see is a player who is a jack of all trades but a master of none. He’s had to fill in at times in the slot and that’s definitely not his strength, but even when he’s playing safety his performance has been nothing outstanding. I love his demeanor and aggressiveness but his numbers from Pro Football Focus show his performance is lacking in all areas, especially pass coverage.
In 2010, his first year as a starter, he missed two regular season games, and had positive ratings in just three games and negative ratings in four. The rest hovered around the average mark. His pass coverage for the year ended up at -4.3, while his run defense was a solid 5.2.
In 2011, he played in just eight regular season games but all three playoff games. He had two games that rated out positively, and three that rated out negatively including a dreadful -3.7 in the AFCCG. For the season he finished with a -3.6 in pass coverage and a -1.7 in run defense.
Now I don’t want to put too much weight in PFF’s metrics but still these numbers don’t jump off the page as a player who is vital to the future of the franchise. Again, I love what Chung brings to the locker room so that has to count for something, but I still think he has a ton to prove on the field this year and it just begins with staying healthy.
Even if he turns in 16 games he needs to first be put in a position to be successful. His stats point to that being in the box more than he’s in coverage, but with Chung’s size it’s hard to think he’ll ever be a dominant force close to the line of scrimmage. That has also played a role in the injuries he’s suffered the past two seasons.
Despite his numbers Chung is the kind of player you want to go to war with. He has all the intangibles you look for, but ultimately the proof is in the playing. I wouldn’t go so far as to say this is a make or break year for him, but I think that if he wants a rich long term deal he’s going to have to elevate his play this season to a level that we have not seen yet out of him.
More on this coming next week at B/R, but this is how I look at it. When Mike Mayock asked BB about team-building through the draft and he said it starts “inside out and down the middle”. It’s my view that the quickest way to make the biggest impact on this defense is to upgrade […]
