Behind the scenes, Taylor is working extremely hard right now,” O’Shea said. ”he’s doing what we ask him to do, which is go to practice, and try to get better every day. That’s what he’s done. He’s had some great receivers in front of him that he can learn from, and if he does so, he’ll continue to progress. All we ask of him is to continue to work hard, and I thin he has worked hard.

Never fun when real work and fake work (i.e. blogging) collide because the one that pays me is going to win out every time, and that ain’t blogging. But that doesn’t mean I didn’t have one eyeball on all things Patriots mini-camp related today.
Some points of interest to pass along:
It seems like a pretty safe bet that Wes Welker will be back sooner than later in 2010, but as we saw last year, a lack of 3rd and 4th receiving threats killed the Patriots offense. So this year all eyes are on Brandon Tate and Taylor Price, two young wide receivers who could make an impact this year. One quote I found particularly interesting from Andy Hart:
My early read on the young WR competition between Taylor Price and Brandon Tate is this – Price is the more fluid route runner with softer hands. Tate probably has better speed.
Nice to know they’re not the exact same player, and I hear more than one mention of Price looking a lot like David Givens.
The two areas on the defense that will be watched closest in training camp will be at OLB and RDE. Right now it sounds like former Raider Gerard Warren is getting a look at RDE, though it’s hard to read too much into a run stopper when they’re practicing without pads.
Meanwhile it sounds like everyone is getting a chance to show what they got at OLB, but early on it seems like TBC, Gary Guyton, Jerod Mayo and Derrick Burgess are the starting foursome. This is how an old coach of mine used to handle things when there were a lot of talented younger players… the vets got the early nod, putting the onus on the young guys to unseat them. So don’t rule Spikes, Cunningham, Crable or McKenzie out of the equation just yet.
The other player I’m expecting big things out of this year is Patrick Chung. Check out what Breer had to say about him:
Patrick Chung seems to be evolving into the type of “Swiss Army Knife” defensive back he was at Oregon, lining up all over the field. At times, he’d stay on the field when the first and second groups were switching, so it’s clear the coaches are trying to throw as much at him as possible. It’ll be interesting seeing how he’s employed in the fall.
It’s hard to read too much into these practices because you the coaches are rotating players thru all the positions, throwing a lot at them, and seeing what sticks.
Today’s recaps:
Patriots Rookie Eye Ball Test #6: Taylor Price
Like cornerbacks, there aren’t really a whole lot of different ways you can go as a receiver. I’m pretty happy with Price’s overall look, the standard WR/DB facemask, the #17… all in all he looks like an NFL WR to me.
Of course under the helmet is a whole different story with tweeps like @xxBeantownBabyxx already dubbing him the new Patriot they’d most like to stalk. So I think it’s fair to say that Price passes the Eye Ball Test both on the field and off.

I’m going to admit that I am huge geek for how football players put together their “look”. There are three categories I like to look at 1) Number 2)Facemask/Helmet 3)Overall.
After the draft my favorite day (coming this Friday) is getting the first glimpse of the new guys in the uniforms. I think you can tell a lot about a player just from their “look” and pretty much project exactly what kind of career they will have, unless it’s Chad Jackson who’s look had him in the Hall of Fame.
With numbers to be announced in the next day or so we’re taking a crack at matching the top rookies with numbers that we like for them.
Devin McCourty
Not too many options for a cornerback right now, but of course some real estate should open up once the axe begins to fall on those who haven’t been hacking it. We’re gonna start McCourty off with 26, but project a move by opening day to: 22. Sorry Wheatley, but if you can’t beat out Wilhite you’re probably getting cut.
Rob Gronkowski
Definitely the easiest projection to make since he was 48 in college and 84 is available. Mark it down for Gronk: 84.
Jermain Cunningham
Hmm, this one seems pretty easy and I am excited to see a Patriot named “Cunningham” again. This is a good opportunity to get a bad taste out of your mouth: 96.
Brandon Spikes
Something tells me Jerod Mayo isn’t giving up 51 for Spikes. It’s still too soon to give out 54 with respect to Tedy. That doesn’t leave too many options, but there’s one that I think would fit nicely: 55.
Aaron Hernandez
Not a lot of options at the moment for Hernandez though 80 and 85 could open up. For now he’ll need to stick with something that’s not really that exciting to me: 87. And that’s assuming Tory Holt doesn’t take it. Otherwise I think Hernandez will be doubling up with someone.
Taylor Price
This is a good example of the perfect number being available for a fast, tough receiver like Price. Mark him down as a permanent 17. Though I really wouldn’t be opposed to seeing him with 80, with all due respect to Troy.
Zoltan Mesko
Punters don’t usually have a lot of choices to make them look good, I think 2 is probably what Zoltan will end up with. But personally I think a far better choice would be: 7.
We’ll hold off on the rest of the draft picks because they’ll all probably be doubled up anyways, and it’s really impossible for a lineman to have an elite look unless you’re Sebastian Vollmer.
On Friday we’ll have a full breakdown of all the rookie looks with analysis and grades.
Official Patriots Football Weekly Blog | From the Hart: Cunningham on the clock Andy thinks this could be Cunningham’s last shot to make the team. Personally I’m not so sure, after all look at how long Ron Brace has managed to hang around. You want to talk make or break years, Brace has had one […]
