The Patriots got in one last practice before the Saints come to town for two joint practices and the first preseason game on Thursday night. There should be a lot to take in over the next two days. Going against a new team after hitting the same people for the last week-and-a-half will be a nice change in pace for the players. It should also give us a chance to get a better sense of how some of our new guys are adjusting to the system.
And in just three short days we’ll get to see the Pats take the field in a game and things really start to get exciting.
Here are the tweets that stood out from Monday’s practice:

Holy Hoodie, I love August. The light, the first cool mornings and most of all, the return of football.
Bryan Stork is back at practice today. Pats in shoulder pads and shorts.

Well that’s a good sign. He didn’t really participate in the practice, which wasn’t really full contact anyway, but it’s a positive he’s out there and not locked in a dark room.
Not here: Dion Lewis, Ebner, BWilliams, Cooper, Vollmer, Amendola
— Mark Daniels (@MarkDanielsPJ) August 8, 2016
Would be good to see Vollmer and Amendola back sooner than later. And in case you missed it, Ebner and the men’s rugby 7s will be in action tomorrow (Tuesday) starting at 12noon EST.
Tre’ Jackson showed up, but doesn’t look like he’s participating

Kinda like a couple of the games last year. I kid. I kid. But he better get back quick if he wants to make this team.
What makes Edelman rare in his route-running? Leg-bend in his jukes & cuts. Rare strength/balance in the bend, play shorter v jam, but isn’t
— Matt Chatham (@chatham58) August 8, 2016
Edelman always had this special agility, but let’s also remember it took him four full seasons to truly break out. Injuries and the presence of Welker and Deion Branch certainly contributed to that, but Edelman did enough to hang on during that time, earning Brady’s trust and learning the playbook. Let’s hope guys like Harper and Carter take notes on that progression.
Jimmy Garoppolo just hit Julian Edelman with a laser over the middle that Edelman caught perfectly in stride. Smartly executed sequence.

Gonna be a lot of this in the first four games.
Brady just threw a beautiful 3-yard TD to Edelman. Ball out before Edelman’s break, good coverage from Coleman. Unstoppable throw.

Ah, I love unstoppable throws.
Kamu Grugier-Hill picks off Jimmy Garoppolo.

KGH (is it okay if I abbreviate that one for now?) is one of the guys I’m most interested to see on Thursday night.
11v11s: Brady 12/19
Garoppolo 14/20 INT— Mark Daniels (@MarkDanielsPJ) August 8, 2016
I know Garoppolo has been catching some flack for having some bad practices the last few days, but I still like to see his completions are up around 66%. That will be the key for those first four games. Make the read, make the easy throw. Don’t force things, especially downfield. Know when to throw it away. Garoppolo has the quick release so he should be getting the ball out on time. It’s just a matter of not make wrong reads, which will be no easy task with the defenses he’s facing that like to disguise things.

He looks fast even in still pictures.
Alan Branch tweaked a leg during team drills and didn’t return.
— Jeff Howe (@jeffphowe) August 8, 2016
That’s not good. Something to monitor. But with the emergence of Markus Kuhn, who is still getting time with the top unit next to Malcolm Brown, along with Terrence Knighton’s presence, gives the Pats some insurance if Branch has to miss any time.
This was the 10th practice of camp. Shorts and light shoulder pads. Heavy on situations (e.g. hands team for onside kick, clocking ball etc)
— Mike Reiss (@MikeReiss) August 8, 2016
Lotta hitting coming tomorrow.
Tyler Gaffney has been getting a ton of reps. Very interested to see what he can do in a preseason game. Has never come this far in camp.

Maybe the biggest x-factor on the team. If he can just show some of the early down burst that Stevan Ridley had, the Pats will have fixed one of their biggest concerns from last season.
