The Patriots were on the field with the Bears on Monday starting three days of joint practices prior to Thursday night’s second preseason game. This should be a good chance to face another veteran quarterback with some interesting size/speed combo weapons who should give the Pats’ defenders some new looks and challenges.
We’re in the dog days of summer now with just under four weeks to go before the Pats open the 2016 campaign in Arizona. Every practice rep, every injury, it’s all so critical now.
Here are the tweets that stood out.
Here’s Malcolm Mitchell – four days after gruesomely dislocating his elbow pic.twitter.com/ygBvuTQ3Rm

So this makes two times already this summer I’ve accepted a player was likely done for the year only to have him return to practice. Even if he can’t do much contact stuff, just being out there and being able to get some reps and stay in the flow of the season is huge for Mitchell. But seriously, how the hell can he be back out there so soon after his arm got pretzeled? Another impressive moment for a rookie who is quickly making a name for himself.
No sign of Brock Vereen, Shea McClellin, Sheard, Lewis, Ebner, Cooper and Vollmer. Amendola and Jackson not in pads

Sheard is on his second day of missing practice, McClellin is on his first. Ebner should be showing up soon, but the biggest boosts will come once Vollmer and Lewis appear off PUP.
Julian Edelman needs to work on that 1-handed catch, but his feet are looking good pic.twitter.com/aiZnKGe2b0

He looks just about ready to go for the season.
Hogan drops a pass from Brissett, and every member of Pats involved in passing drill drops & does pushups while Bears defenders look on.

This would’ve been a great picture.
Gronkowski pulled up after going after a Brady pass near the sideline. Took his helmet off and pulled himself out of 7-on-7. Leaving now.
— Phil Perry (@PhilAPerry) August 15, 2016
Headline of this practice is Gronk walking off. Wouldn’t seem like anything too major and Gronk isn’t going to play in the preseason anyway, so probably not much of a big deal at all here.
Brady and Bolden just connected on a sweeeeet wheel route out of the backfield. Dropped it right into his hands.
— Christopher Price (@cpriceNFL) August 15, 2016
Bolden’s making more plays but I still think if he’s playing running back it’s simply as a stop gap. His specialty is special teams, but it’s nice to know he can fill in if injuries start sticking.
If this practice is any indication, the Bears OL isn’t going to enjoy blocking Hightower and Collins on Thursday.
— Jeff Howe (@jeffphowe) August 15, 2016
Nobody is going to enjoy blocking those two.
Malcolm Butler ejected from practice after getting into it with Alshon Jeffery. Things escalated. Lots of shoving. pic.twitter.com/TlWlG8npAb

Not surprising. Butler plays with that edge and I can imagine plenty of WRs can’t stand it.
Lots of DBs were active in that brawl – Harmon and Cyrus Jones stuck out to me
— Mark Daniels (@MarkDanielsPJ) August 15, 2016
Sticking up for their teammate. Love it.
Chris Long just swam through brother Kyle Long for a would-be sack if such defensive endeavors were allowed at practice.
— Jeff Howe (@jeffphowe) August 15, 2016
I continue to be so excited for Chris Long this year. If he stays healthy people are going to remember how good he was before the last two seasons derailed him. Gotta imagine getting out of the Rams organization is motivational.
Another mini beef at the end of practice. Bennett involved with Bears d-linemen. Solder helps break it up. Lots of chatter afterwards.
— Phil Perry (@PhilAPerry) August 15, 2016
Next two days of practice and then Thursday’s game are going to be INTERESTING.
With Shea McClellin and Rob Ninkovich not participating, Jonathan Freeny was the third linebacker. Ramon Humber was the top backup
— Mark Daniels (@MarkDanielsPJ) August 15, 2016
What I was hoping to avoid this offseason. We’ll see what’s up with McClellin. Hopefully a rest day?
Patriots standouts: Coleman, LeBlanc, Grugier-Hill, Collins.
— Doug Kyed (@DougKyed) August 15, 2016
Young guys standing out along with Collins, who seems poised for a monster year. Better re-sign him quick, that price tag is going up game-by-game once the season starts.

Reason #3485 I’m glad I’m not an NFL player. This looks miserable. But this is the kind of thing great teams do, hitting the sled in deadly heat. It will pay off down the road.
