The media were given their first glimpse of the 2019 Patriots today, leaving bloggers like me to hang on their every tweet and report. Here are the tweets that stood out.
Absent from OTAs today: Tom Brady, Patrick Chung, Sony Michel, Nate Ebner, Kyle Van Noy, Yodny Cajuste, Nick Brossette, Isaiah Wynn, Michael Bennett, Austin Seferian-Jenkins, Demaryius Thomas, Ryan Allen, Joe Cardona and Deatrich Wise pic.twitter.com/WmHNsEPNtG

Pretty good list of absentees, the most notable of which would be Seferian-Jenkins and Ryan Allen. The team could really use Seferian-Jenkins to get out there asap, while Allen could be facing competition for his job (see below). The rest are mostly vets, some coming off injuries. Cajuste has a shot at a roster spot if he can get on the field. Michel’s absence makes me further happy about drafting Damien Harris. Nick Brossette is an undrafted rookie running back who’s also out.
Bailey has a massive leg. Was booming punts and kickoffs. Dropped a few down inside the five on punts as well. He’s really good.

Yes, the Patriots traded up for a punter and with Ryan Allen on a one-year, $1.5 million deal, there could very well be a punter competition burgeoning.
With Isaiah Wynn absent, Joe Thuney received the reps at left tackle. Brian Schwenke took over Thuney’s spot at guard.

With the retirement of Jared Veldheer and Isaiah Wynn still recovering from a torn Achilles this is how their starting depth looked. A bit scary for sure. I’d still expect a move there.
N’Keal Harry was all over the place in 11v11s. He caught five passes with one drop. He had a nice touchdown grab in traffic. Then another TD in double coverage (Jackson/Dawson). He also caught passes from all three QBs.

Was thrilled with this pick and it’s hard not to get excited with across-the-board reports like this one from Mark Daniels. It’s all about just staying on the field for Harry.
And we’re off. With the extension of Edelman and Harry standing out, it feels like things are headed in the right direction at wide receiver. Would love to see someone else emerge over the next four months.
The ares of concern — tight end and left tackle — now seem a bit more concerning. Though the depth of the secondary was on display for a defense that looks like it’s going to be stacked.
